Research Intern 2 : Food purchase observation

Role Title: Research Intern 2 : Food purchase observation

Organisation: Telethon Kids Institute (TKI)

Internship Period: Semester 1 (February - May)

Location: Nedlands

Role Description

Anecdotally, secondary school-aged children access food retail outlets before and after school where there are outlets close to school grounds. WA secondary schools may set discretionary policies allowing some students to leave school during school hours. This project will collect data on the patronage of food outlets close to schools in the Perth metropolitan area. A pair of research interns would use a mobile phone app and manual data collection log sheets to discreetly observe students before and after school, and during breaks if the school allows students to leave. There will be no interaction with school students or the community.
Following data collection, the intern has the opportunity to be involved in analysis of the data for each school and comparing schools, and in creating reports and manuscripts to disseminate the findings. There may also be the requirement to work on other Food and Nutrition Team projects, as required.
