Francesca supports research into sustainable food for the future

5 December, 2023

Francesca Foschi is a Master of Biological Science (Conservation Biology specialisation) student at UWA, and recently supported research into the alternative protein industry with the electorate office of Lisa Baker MLA through a McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship.

“I contributed to a comprehensive report on how governments around the world develop and sustain the alternative protein industry. This industry is vital for climate change mitigation, biodiversity preservation, and future food security, since it offers sustainable food solutions that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional animal-based protein sources,” Francesca said.

“Before this internship my experience was limited to writing scientific reports. Initially, the transition to writing a report focused on policies and legislation, with a specific style and language, was challenging, however my supervisor guided me through each step, and taught me how to tackle the most challenging aspects of the work,” she said.

The report Francesca worked on will inform Ms Baker and her office on how governments have supported food systems transformation.

Elizabeth Lennon, Research Officer with Ms Baker’s electorate office, said it was a pleasure to work collaboratively with Francesca.

“Franscesca and I worked together to gather information within a defined information architecture framework; her enthusiasm and work ethic were exceptional,” Ms Lennon said.

“She took the time to understand a very complex topic, and she gathered and curated a lot of information within the research framework.”

Francesca said the internship had shifted her perspective on sustainability, as well as giving her valuable practical experience for her future work in conservation.

“I learnt a lot about how social equity and justice intertwine with sustainability and food management systems,” she said.

“The expertise I gained in desktop research and report writing will be very important”.

Francesca recommended the McCusker Centre for Citizenship Internship Program to other students.

“This program is a unique opportunity to engage directly with the local community. It allows students to gain practical experience in social advocacy and community organisation, building a better understanding of social dynamics and policy making.

“The internship is a rewarding experience for any student looking to deepen their understanding and skills in public service.”
