Gabby Miocevich, a UWA Juris Doctor student, gained new insights into the legal profession while supporting vulnerable groups in the community through her Semester One McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship with Legal Aid WA.
In the Civil Law Framework Intern role, Gabby completed research and literature reviews on areas of greatest legal need, looked at funding agreements, and made recommendations based on client experiences and law data.
“I wanted to complement my academic work with practical work experience, which led me to apply for an Internship with the McCusker Centre. I was particularly drawn to this opportunity because I wanted to contribute to an organisation dedicated to supporting vulnerable members of our society” Gabby said.
“I have been able to attend client meetings and hear stories of hardship, which has deepened my understanding of the challenges people face. I’ve gained insights into various groups within the WA community, including single parents, women, youth, people with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and those living in rural and remote areas.
“In undertaking this role, I have been able to communicate and collaborate with a wide range of individuals within the organisation. I had the opportunity to present research findings on how Legal Aid can best serve vulnerable individuals and groups to the leadership team, creating a document that can be utilised by the entire team moving forward,” she said.
Gemma Mitchell, Director of Civil Law at Legal Aid WA, said that Gabby’s work had built on the work of previous interns through the McCusker Centre for Citizenship program.
“This work has culminated in a 91-page report which contains a deep dive into the work of the Civil Law Division, as well as the most up-to-date available information into civil legal need,” Ms Mitchell said.
“The report is an important resource, and I look forward to taking steps to implement the recommendations and next steps. Gabby was a delight to work with, and it has been wonderful to see the idea for this project come to life.”
The internship experience provided Gabby with equal measures of fulfilment from making a meaningful contribution, and benefits in personal and professional growth.
“The internship opened my eyes up to a whole new sector of the law. By working with extremely inspiring individuals who have such rich experience, I have gained a confidence that I can thrive in whatever avenue I choose,” Gabby said.
“The mentorship from my supervisor was invaluable. Gemma consistently encouraged and supported me, offering guidance throughout my time with Legal Aid, and providing advice for future endeavours. This experience has made me feel much more secure about my career path, and I am incredibly excited to continue my professional journey.”
