Role Title: Lessons Management Intern

Organisation: Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES)

Internship Period: Semester 1 (February - May)

Location: Fire & Emergency Services Academy, Forrestfield.

Role Description

The intern will work as part of the Lessons Management (LM) team, within the Knowledge and Training Support (KaTS) business unit (Learning and Development (L&D) division). The LM team is comprised of the LM Manager and a Lessons Management Officer.
The LM team are responsible for: - coordinating major incident reviews / developing reports / tracking outcomes. - collating and analysing observations from operational areas / activities to support continuous improvement with DFES. The Intern will: Interrogate the Lessons Management Observations Register to undertake qualitative and quantitative analysis of data to: i. create a timeline of incidents / events; and ii. identify themes/lessons as they align with the “Western Australian Emergency Management Capability Framework” (State Emergency Management Committee, 2023). Deliverables: a) a report and infographic that can be published on the Lessons Management intranet page for all personnel. b) A 10 min presentation targeted at senior leadership highlighting the trends.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) was established on the 1st November 2012, and performs a critical role coordinating emergency services for a range of natural disasters and emergency incidents threatening life and property.
It comprises of 1600 operational personnel and corporate staff members. It also has an extensive network of more than 27,000 volunteers engaged in the delivery of services to the community. The Operational Research and Development branch’s purpose is to enable the continuous improvement of our operational assets including firefighting fleet, equipment and personal protective clothing to enhance service delivery to the community and increase the capability of the department.
