Objective: The intern will review the existing SQL Server views that feed our Power BI reports and other reporting. The aim is to improve query performance and simplify the reporting data layer.
The intern will support a project to improve the performance, efficiency and structure of reporting databases by cataloguing existing views, their dependencies and associated reports, and analysing query performance using execution plans, IO/time statistics and Query Store. The intern will identify opportunities to improve performance through indexing changes and T-SQL refactoring, including removing redundant joins and nested views, as well as identifying duplicated or overlapping views that could be consolidated or retired. They will test refactored code against the original outputs to ensure accuracy and benchmark performance before and after changes. The intern will produce an inventory and dependency map of reporting views, performance and indexing recommendations, optimised views, recommendations for consolidation or decommissioning, and clear documentation of their findings.
