Role Title: Bushfire Ready Program support Intern

The intern will support the Bushfire Ready Program by coordinating the planning and delivery of a statewide celebration marking 30 years of community‑led bushfire preparedness in Western Australia. This role is ideal for a student with a background in marketing, communications, or events, and offers the opportunity to manage an event from concept to completion.
Key Responsibilities
Event coordination — Plan, organise, and deliver a milestone celebration event scheduled for September/October, ensuring all logistics, timelines, and stakeholder needs are met.
Volunteer and stakeholder engagement — Work closely with Bushfire Ready Facilitators, volunteers, Community Preparedness Advisors, and DFES staff to coordinate participation, roles, and event contributions.
Marketing and communications — Develop marketing materials such as event invitations, posters, digital assets, social media content, and internal communications to promote the anniversary celebration.
Brand and message alignment — Ensure all materials align with Bushfire Ready and Be Hazard Ready branding, tone, and community‑focused messaging.
Event logistics — Support venue selection, catering, equipment hire, run sheets, guest lists, accessibility considerations, and on‑the‑day coordination.
Community storytelling — Assist in gathering stories, photos, and milestones from 30 years of Bushfire Ready to showcase at the event.
Reporting and documentation — Prepare post‑event summary
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) was established on the 1st November 2012, and performs a critical role coordinating emergency services for a range of natural disasters and emergency incidents threatening life and property.
It comprises of 1600 operational personnel and corporate staff members. It also has an extensive network of more than 27,000 volunteers engaged in the delivery of services to the community.
The Operational Research and Development branch’s purpose is to enable the continuous improvement of our operational assets including firefighting fleet, equipment and personal protective clothing to enhance service delivery to the community and increase the capability of the department.
