Role Title: Research intern 2: Mapping Secure Research Environments and Federated Data Systems - Best Practice Recommendations
Organisation: The Raine Study
Internship Period: Semester 2 (July – October)
Location: Crawley
The intern will join the Raine Study Science Team and contribute to a strategic project focused on the future of secure data access and research infrastructure for one of Australia's leading longitudinal and multigenerational cohort studies.
The intern will undertake a review of Secure Research Environments (SREs), Trusted Research Environments (TREs), federated data systems, and data governance frameworks used by leading research organisations in Australia and internationally. Through literature reviews, case study analysis, and comparative assessment, the intern will evaluate how different approaches support secure, ethical, and efficient access to sensitive health and research data.
Working closely with the Scientific Manager (Supervisor), Scientific Director, and members of the Raine Study Science Team, the intern will explore which infrastructure models are best suited to the Raine Study’s extensive longitudinal and multigenerational data holdings. The project will also examine opportunities to enhance alignment with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data principles while maintaining participant privacy, trust, and ethical governance.
The intern will primarily interact with:
The Raine Study Science Team, the Scientific Manager and Scientific Director
This role is ideal for students interested in health research, data science and innovation, and research governance, offering exposure to the practical challenges of secure and ethical data management.
