Exploration of the role of Speech Pathology in the Emergency Department

Role Title: Exploration of the role of Speech Pathology in the Emergency Department

Organisation: North Metropolitan Health Service

Internship Period: Semester 2 (July – October)

Location: Nedlands

Role Description

The Speech Pathology department at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital currently do not have a dedicated position within the ED. Our current role in the ED is on a referral basis with ED referrals competing with inpatient demands and priorities. With increased wait times and length of ED admissions, a dedicated ED Speech Pathology role would be essential in enabling early assessment to improve patient flow through ED, hospital LOS and patient outcomes. This activity seeks to gather information regarding the existing referral process and wait times of general medical patients requiring Speech Pathology assessment and intervention admitted via the Emergency Department.
